Someone Else Agrees That Windows XP Won’t Be Disappearing Soon

TechRepublic’s “10 reasons why Windows XP will be around a while” by Brien Posey lists many of the reasons I also believe Microsoft will have a hard time getting people to switch from XP to Windows 7:
- “Many organizations don’t see the need to upgrade”
absolutely true, especially in this economy — if XP is still working for them, they’ve got it made - “You can still get support”
according to Microsoft’s The future of Windows XP, we all have support until 2014, and by then Microsoft may even have another OS coming out - “It’s integrated into Windows 7”
cool concept: read the article - “It has a loyal following”
strange, but true - “It runs on less powerful hardware”
see Wikipedia for the astoundingly low system requirements - “It offers better support for legacy applications”
definitely a problem with Vista - “Hardware manufacturers still support it”
he’s right about the importance of this one - “Netbooks favor it”
this is new to me, but I can believe it since the Vista system requirements are so high - “It has a proven track record”
8 years strong - “What’s old is new”
interesting point Mr. Posey makes, showing Microsoft to be (at least in this instance) its own worst enemy
Makes me feel better about my recommendation to use the Tweak UI PowerToy to adjust your Windows XP settings. (There are other XP PowerToys available too, so check them out.)
In any case, read the TechRepublic article; I think he’s right. At the least, he lays out some good points to keep in mind, if you are even contemplating a switch to 7. Better to consider all the implications and make an informed choice, rather than simply upgrade out of habit or fear.
8 years of reliability and stability indicates there might still be life in WinXP yet…
