Edward Tufte’s “Presenting Data and Information” Seminar

Spend an Unforgettable Day with the Leonardo da Vinci of Data

Edward Tufte’s one-day seminar is probably the best single investment you can make to open your eyes and mind to the effective design of information.

Edward Tufte, the man known as “the Leonardo da Vinci of data” (New York Times), presents a one-day seminar that is, in my estimation, the best value for your money you will find in continuing your education in design. In this “One visionary day…the insights of this class lead to new levels of understanding both for creators and viewers of visual displays” (Wired).

Like Son, Like Father

It’s been 10 years, nearly to the day, since I attended Tufte’s amazing seminar. Interestingly, it was the Hartford, Connecticut Seminar described in Escaping Flatland by Alan Bisbort that I attended. Since Bisbort’s article so vividly describes the event, I won’t go into all the details myself — if you want to know more, read the article.

On my recommendation, my dad attended a Tufte seminar with several colleagues (at the time he was Graduate Dean at a Big 10 University in the midwest). From what I hear, they were all well satisfied with the course and found the books quite instructive as well.

By The Book

As an attendee, you automatically receive a set of Tufte’s four books: The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, Envisioning Information, Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative and Beautiful Evidence. Not only that, but before class starts Tufte can sign your books and recommend specific sections of the books for you to consult that will help you with your specific needs or projects. Tufte is personable and generous with his time and advice, and has a seemingly unlimited energy supply.

Better Than College

My final word is that “Presenting Data and Information” was the best, most enjoyable, most challenging course of study I’ve had since grad school at Yale. Tufte suavely packs four books’ worth of material into the day, and lets you out 15 minutes early (one of his presentation tips).

I have returned to Tufte’s work time and again over the past 10 years, and I just keep learning. If you get a chance to see him in person, don’t let it pass you by!
