Tweak UI PowerToy Improves Microsoft Windows XP
Despite the arrival of Windows 7 this Fall, many of us will continue to use Windows XP as our chosen operating system. A free software program from Microsoft, specially designed for Windows XP, can help you to really make Windows XP your own.
For example, in the screenshot below you can see standard desktop icons with the standard arrow on each one to indicate that they take you somewhere:
But we already know what the arrows mean! — What if you don’t want those silly arrows?
Wouldn’t this be better:
See — less cluttered…less obtrusive…less visually noisy.
The example above shows just one of dozens of customizations you can make to your Windows XP installation using this program called Tweak UI (shown below).
Other customizations you can make using Tweak UI include settings for how your system interacts with your mouse, for how various other software you use is triggered by different file types and media types (like CDs or DVDs), and for specifying which programs appear in the Windows ‘Start’ menu.

Iconico Screen Calipers Rule the Screen
I’m working on the full review which I hope to present to you soon, but in the meantime I want to share with you one of the most useful pieces of software I’ve ever used. It’s called Screen Calipers and it’s made by Iconico Software. You might think that something as humble as a ruler you use on your computer monitor could never garner such an accolade. Wrong. There are other onscreen rulers available, but none come close to this little gem.
Whether you use the Calipers when setting music (as in these screenshots), when developing forms in a desktop publishing program, as an aid in constructing your web site, to measure distances in digitized x-rays, or whatever…you will be amazed at all the various ways this utility can ease your life and improve your work.
